The envelope arrives in the mail. You tear it open.
You finally have the official crash report from the state. You expect it to clearly state that the other driver caused the wreck. Instead, you are staring at a confusing grid of boxes, numbers, and indecipherable codes. Worse, you look at the officer’s narrative and realize the story is completely wrong.
Panic sets in. The insurance adjuster is already calling, claiming this piece of paper means they owe you nothing.
Do not panic. I tell clients this every single day when they bring me the exact topic shown in the file “image_551d21.png”: How to Read a Texas Police Accident Report — and Why It’s Not the Final Word.
Insurance companies treat this form like gospel when it benefits them. They use it to intimidate you. But this report is not a court order. It is just an officer’s opinion. Here is how to decode the paperwork, spot the traps the insurance company will use against you, and how we rip up the false narrative to force a massive payout.
The Anatomy of the CR-3 Crash Report
In Texas, law enforcement uses a highly specific document called the CR-3 Peace Officer’s Crash Report. At first glance, it looks like a complicated tax form. It is designed for state data collection, not for clarity.
The front page gives you the basics. It lists the drivers, the vehicles, and the insurance companies. It tells you exactly who hit you. But the corporate insurance adjusters do not care about the front page. They flip straight to the second page.
This is where the financial damage is done.
The second page contains a small, easily overlooked box labeled “Contributing Factors.” Officers do not write out what happened here. They use a numbered code system. If you see a code listed next to your name, the insurance company is already calculating how much money they can steal from you.
For example, code 22 means “Failed to Control Speed.” Code 44 stands for “Driver Inattention.” If the officer slapped one of those numbers next to your vehicle unit, the adjuster will immediately try to shift the blame onto your shoulders.
Texas operates under a modified comparative fault rule. If you are found to be 51 percent or more responsible for the accident, you get nothing. Zero. The insurance adjusters know this law inside and out. They scour the CR-3 report looking for any excuse to assign you a percentage of the blame. If they can use a random numerical code to stick you with 30 percent of the fault, they just legally stole 30 percent of your settlement.

The Injury Severity Trap
There is another highly dangerous section on this report. It tracks the severity of your physical injuries.
Officers use a quick letter system on the scene. “N” means no injury. “B” stands for a suspected minor injury. “A” means a suspected serious injury.
You might have been in absolute shock at the crash scene. Your adrenaline was pumping. You told the officer you felt okay, assuming you were just bruised and battered. They wrote down an “N” on the official record. Two days later, you wake up screaming because you have a ruptured disc in your spine.
The insurance adjuster will weaponize that single letter. They will wave the police report in your face and claim you were completely fine at the scene. They will accuse you of faking your spinal injury just to get a payout.
We do not let them play doctor. According to the Texas Department of Transportation, crash reports are merely an officer’s roadside assessment. A police officer is not an orthopedic surgeon. We rely on MRI scans and elite medical testimony to prove your pain, not a hastily scribbled letter on a state form.
When the At-Fault Driver Lies
How do so many police reports get the facts completely wrong?
It happens all the time. The officer did not witness the crash. They arrived thirty minutes later to find a chaotic debris field and angry drivers. While you were trapped in your crushed vehicle waiting for the paramedics, the other driver was out walking around.
The at-fault driver got to the officer first. They lied.
They claimed you swerved. They claimed you stopped suddenly. They spun a completely fabricated story to save their own skin. The rushed officer took their word for it, jotted it down in the narrative section on page three, and finalized the report.
Now, the billion-dollar insurance machine is using that coward’s lie to deny your claim. They want you to give up. They want you to believe that fighting an official government document is completely impossible.
Tearing Up the Paperwork
They are dead wrong. We beat bad police reports every single week.
When a corporate adjuster tells you the police report is the final word, they are trying to bully you into submission. A police report is highly subjective. In a Texas courtroom, the officer’s crash report is often considered inadmissible hearsay precisely because the officer did not actually witness the collision.
We do not rely on flawed paperwork. We rely on undeniable physics.
When you hire BadCrash, our elite trial team immediately goes on the offensive. We bypass the police report and hunt down the raw evidence. We download the black box data from the negligent driver’s truck to prove they were speeding. We secure nearby surveillance footage that proves they ran the red light. We hire accident reconstruction experts who use the physical crush damage on the vehicles to expose exactly how the impact happened.
We build a wall of truth that completely obliterates the officer’s flawed narrative.
When the insurance company realizes we have the hard data, their entire defense collapses. They know they cannot hide behind a piece of paper when we have the video evidence ready to show a Texas jury.
Stop Fighting on Their Terms
You have been through enough. You survived a terrifying wreck. You are drowning in medical debt. You should not have to spend your evenings trying to decode a confusing government document while a hostile adjuster breathes down your neck.
Take a breath. Let us handle the fight.
We know exactly how to read a Texas crash report. More importantly, we know exactly how to defeat a bad one. We will gather the real evidence, expose the lies, and force the massive insurance corporation to pay for the destruction they caused.
